Your workspace

The example project

Your workspace starts seeded rather than empty. An empty workspace teaches you where the New button is; a populated one lets an exercise ask you to find something wrong with it.

Yours is the Zeemeeuw refit: a fishing vessel at a repair yard, with the register, the transmittals, the comments and the inspection reports a document controller sees six months in. The details are on How document control works; the short version is that everything you are asked to find is really there, and everything you are asked to change is a change a document controller makes.

Finding it in Shipbuilder

Open workspace in the header of this site takes you straight into your workspace. It is named after a ship, with your name after it — MT Waalhaven — Anna Trainee — and that is the name to look for in Shipbuilder’s workspace selector (top right) if you ever land on the selector instead. Every trainee has their own; work done in somebody else’s does not count.

Your Dashboard already has three open comments on it. They are yours: the first exercise starts there.

Three kinds of exercise

The kind decides how it is checked, and it follows from what you are asked to do.

You are asked toIt is checked by
change somethingthe database, when you press Check
find somethinganswering for it
work through a storythe database, a step at a time

An action exercise reads what you built rather than what you clicked, so the order you work in does not matter and you can check as often as you like.

A find exercise changes nothing, so there is nothing in your data to look at. You pick an answer and the service says whether it is one — it never sends the right answer to your browser, so you cannot read it off the page.

A storyline is a sequence, and finishing a step puts something new in your workspace. Go and look after each step: the next one is about what the last one delivered.

Checked yourself

Any exercise can also ask you to confirm something the database cannot see: a screen showing what it should, a file that opens, a column in the right place. The annotated screenshot above it shows what to look for.

Ticking these is for you. Nothing is recorded, and nothing depends on them.

Starting over

Break things on purpose; that is what a training workspace is for. When it is time to start clean, reset it here — the workspace is wiped and seeded again, exactly as it was on your first sign-in. Your progress on this site is kept; the data in the workspace is not.

Reset my workspace

Puts the workspace back to the state it had when it was first set up: every change you made is gone, every exercise starts over. It takes about a minute. Nothing else — not your progress on this site, not anybody else's workspace — is touched.

Sign in to reset your workspace.

If a check looks wrong

It might be. A check is written against the application as it is today, and one that has drifted fails somebody who did the exercise correctly.

If you are confident and a check disagrees, say so. That is the most useful bug report there is.
